709 Chestnut street, Saint Louis Missouri, the Gateway to the west, the most prestigious building, known as the Wainwright building was created. For the early 1890’s a 10 story building was deemed the first skyscraper to stand making it world widely known. One of the biggest reasons this is so well known is because of its revolutionary steel frame. Louis Sullivan (pronounced Louie Sullivan) designed the Wainwright Building in 1890 for Ellis Wainwright who the building is named after. Ellis Wainwright was half German, from his father, and half American, from his mother. He was married and was 30 years old. Louis Sullivan is a well known architect for designing the Wainwright building and creating the “U” featured building. With a “U” shaped building, this allowed natural light to travel through the windows to decrease electrical demand. The Wainwright building had real-estate agency and a brewery inside.This is no wonder because Ellis Wainwright worked as a brewer and acted as the president of the Saint Louis Brewing Company. To house a brewery, this made a cultural society.

The Wainwright building had many different business however, the Brewery inside was most well known. The Brewery employed many people and brought in lots of income to Ellis Wainwright. There were many different jobs inside the Brewery such as the production (bottling and kegging), sales and marketers, and there were many other jobs too. However, there were other business inside the Wainwright building such as a Real Estate Agency. The Real Estate Agency employed many workers and brought in income. One type of worker who works in a Real Estate agency is a Real Estate Agent. There were a high demand for the office space in the Wainwright building. There were many reality businesses and even and architecture company. This shows that many people were buying/selling their possessions which grew the economy. With such a growing population and economy, in a high traffic area, this grew Saint Louis to put them on the map.
How Did the Wainwright Building Make it on the Map?
Since the Wainwright Building was so revolutionary, architecturally and constructionally, which was a clear reflection of Saint Louis as a society. A brewery was a good thing to help people in the city because this meant they were not all serious. Not only was this a cultural thing, but it was a phenomenal industry which boosted the city greatly. They had many railroads leading to them and lots of trade through the river. With Saint Louis in such a “hub” there were many industries which thrived making the Wainwright Building very famous. Saint Louis was an extremely good example of architecture and using your resources. Terra cotta is an ideal material for many reasons, two being it is a native material and is easy to mold and carve into intricate designs. Also, a native material, red bricks was used for water insulation. To add a little bit of pizazz to the building, some granite near the ground. If we could create a building, we would like to used the materials to be described and the ones previously described. Then the main idea: “U” shaped structure, glass, and window wells are important to let in as much natural light to make this building very green. The Wainwright building is an extremely famous building in the City of Saint Louis for its role in owning multiple industries.
